Google Mimics Meta’s Strategy with Launch of Audio-Enhanced Smart Glasses at IO 2026

Google is re-entering the smart glasses market.

During Google I/O on Tuesday, the company revealed a new collaboration with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to create a fresh line of AI-driven glasses. These devices are designed to be compatible with both Android and iOS devices and have been developed alongside Samsung. They are expected to launch later this year, according to the company.

Google refers to these innovative devices as “audio glasses,” enabling users to issue voice commands and accomplish tasks through its suite of apps and services, including Gemini.

Users can simply communicate with their glasses—during the demo on Tuesday, one Googler demonstrated ordering coffee by talking directly to the device, which responded seamlessly when paired.

Google has explored the smart glasses sector multiple times over the years. Its initial foray, Google Glass, notably contributed to the derogatory term “glassholes.”

The landscape for smart glasses has evolved since those days, with significant investment from major firms, particularly Meta, alongside numerous startups.
