Microsoft 365 Outage Persists, Yet Positive Updates Emerge

Microsoft is currently navigating the second day of a significant outage that has disrupted customer access to Outlook email and various Microsoft 365 services.

On Monday, considerable progress was made toward addressing the issue, which stemmed from a complication with the Exchange Online service. This led to delays, failures, authentication issues, and other difficulties for many Outlook users.

Nevertheless, as of Tuesday, the issue remains unresolved. Microsoft’s recent update on X indicates that while their mitigation efforts continue, it does not imply that the situation has fully returned to normal.

Though Outlook has received the most attention, Microsoft’s status page for Microsoft 365 (Business and Enterprise) shows that other services were also affected, such as SharePoint, Copilot, Teams, Purview, Defender XDR, the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, and Universal Print.

These issues were associated with a problem in a “core authentication configuration used by multiple Microsoft 365 services.”

Early in the day, Microsoft reported via X the steps they were taking to address an issue uncovered during their investigation, identified as a misconfiguration impacting their services. This misconfiguration hindered authentication components from “deploying as intended to a portion of infrastructure.”

Initially, Microsoft investigated recent changes that may have triggered the problem and began testing and implementing various solutions to enhance the experience for end users. Over time, as these measures were put in place, Microsoft noted that Outlook users should expect a “gradual recovery” in their mail flow. By 10 p.m. ET on Monday, the company announced improved mail flow, though the search functionality continued to encounter issues.

Shortly after 3 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Microsoft acknowledged some progress with the search functionality.

While many users may notice improvements at this point, Microsoft has not confirmed the complete restoration of all services.

Their latest update on X mentioned that “indications from telemetry remain positive” and service availability is on the rise. Microsoft is now entering a phase of extended monitoring to ensure a comprehensive resolution.
