Disney+ Teams Up with TikTok Creators to Enhance Fan Content in Short-Form Videos

Disney has teamed up with TikTok to integrate fan-created content focused on Disney directly into the Disney+ app. This project will kick off with a pilot in the U.S. in the upcoming months, with plans for future expansion into other markets.

As part of this collaboration, user-generated TikTok videos featuring Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars will be showcased in the “Verts” section of Disney+, a new short-form video stream introduced on the platform.

Disney has been actively seeking to diversify and enhance the variety of content in its video feed. Last year, the company made a substantial $1 billion investment in OpenAI through a three-year licensing deal, aimed at enabling users to create short clips with Disney characters on the AI lab’s video creation platform, Sora. However, this initiative was abruptly halted when OpenAI shut down Sora in March.

This partnership with TikTok appears to be a logical next step, especially as streaming services compete with social media for audience engagement. This competitive environment is one motivation behind Disney’s launch of the Verts feature, aligning itself with platforms like Netflix, HBO Max, and Prime Video.

The agreement also emphasizes Disney’s awareness that much of the emerging creative talent resides on social media. Through the newly introduced Disney Creator Ambassador Program, TikTok creators will have access to Disney’s vast library of resources, as well as opportunities for rewards, increased visibility, exclusive events, and career advancement.

Other streaming platforms, such as Tubi and Peacock, have also partnered with TikTok creators to develop original long-form content for their services.

This announcement coincides with Disney’s Q3 earnings report, where the company revealed that its subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) operating income skyrocketed to $712 million, a significant increase from $329 million the previous year. Additionally, in a strategic shift, Disney is moving its consumer products division from the Experiences segment to Studios.
