Renault Shocks with Teaser for New ‘Urban SUV’ Bridger Concept

In an unexpected turn of events, Renault has unveiled a new teaser image presenting a concept SUV that will sit beneath the Duster in their lineup.

Not a Jimny Competitor

Named the Bridger Concept, this sub-four meter SUV is set to make its official appearance on 10 March at Renault’s Chennai facility in India.

While initially seen as a competitor to the Suzuki Jimny, the Bridger is categorized as an urban SUV, indicating it may not feature a four-wheel drive system.

In this regard, it will resemble the Indian-manufactured Duster, which omits the all-wheel drive system available in its European version.

Additionally, it will not be a replacement for the Kiger; instead, it will be positioned above it and below the Duster in Renault India’s product portfolio.

What to Expect?

Teased through a single image featuring Defender-inspired taillights and a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate, the Bridger will accommodate five passengers and will be offered exclusively in a five-door layout, unlike the Jimny’s three-door design.

The name, derived from “bridge,” symbolizes “strength, connection, and link.” The Bridger aims to deliver “no compromises on interior space” despite its compact length of under 4,000 mm.

According to Autocar India, the powertrain is likely to be the same 1.0-litre turbocharged engine found in the Kiger.

This setup could produce outputs of 74 kW/160 Nm with the five-speed manual transmission, and 152 Nm when paired with the optional CVT.

“The name Renault Bridger embodies the same philosophy as the Renault Duster,” said Sylvia dos Santos, Renault’s Head of Naming Strategy. “It’s a powerful, versatile name, ideally suited for our new urban SUV concept and signifies a new chapter in our global strategy.”

Will It Arrive in South Africa?

While Renault has yet to reveal more details, the Autocar India report indicates that production is anticipated to start in 2027, with South Africa noted as a significant export market.

With less than a week until its official unveiling, further teasers can be expected soon.
