Apple Music to Introduce Transparency Tags for Differentiating AI-Generated Music, According to Report

Apple Music is transforming the approach record labels and distributors take to identify AI-generated or AI-assisted content during uploads to the platform.

As reported by Music Business Worldwide, Apple communicated with industry partners via a newsletter on Wednesday, detailing its plans to implement new metadata that fosters transparency regarding AI usage in music.

Metadata usually encompasses details like song title, album title, genre, artist name, and other information that aids in organizing files. With the new system, Apple Music will enable the inclusion of metadata tags that distributors can use to indicate the involvement of AI-generated content in various elements of a song. These tags will help differentiate aspects such as artwork, track (music), composition (lyrics), or music video.

This initiative appears to resonate with Apple Music users—just days ago, a Reddit user shared a mock-up of a similar feature. However, the drawback with this opt-in tagging system is that it relies on labels or distributors to manually flag their AI usage. Spotify is pursuing a comparable approach.

Other streaming platforms like Deezer are attempting to identify content using proprietary AI-detection tools, though achieving high accuracy in such systems remains a challenge.

TechCrunch has reached out to Apple for further details.
