OpenAI Engages with Government Officials Regarding Its DeepSeek Investigation
OpenAI has announced that it is in discussions with government officials regarding its ongoing investigation into DeepSeek.
The creator of ChatGPT previously asserted that it possesses evidence indicating that DeepSeek trained its AI models with data obtained improperly from OpenAI’s API. In a Bloomberg TV interview this Monday, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane, mentioned that the company has engaged with government officials about the investigation.
Some critics have accused OpenAI of being hypocritical in this situation. Multiple publishers are currently suing the company for allegedly using their copyrighted works to train its AI models. Yet now, OpenAI is focusing on DeepSeek for allegedly training on its AI model outputs.
Lehane clarified that there is a distinction between the two. He compared OpenAI’s training methods to studying a book from a library, while characterizing DeepSeek’s practices as akin to rebranding a library book and selling it as one’s own.
This situation parallels the argument made by the New York Times in its copyright lawsuit against OpenAI.
