Volvo Car SA Issues Recall for XC90 Model; Cape Herb and Spice Announces Product Recalls
Johannesburg – Volvo Car South Africa has announced a recall for its XC90 model due to the identification of a possible software glitch in the brake control module.
The XC90 model was launched for sale in South Africa in January 2023.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) stated that Volvo Car South Africa alerted them of a potential software problem in the brake control module for the XC90, which became available for purchase in January 2023.
In a statement released on Tuesday, (4 February 2025), the NCC provided an update regarding three Volvo Car South Africa models.
“The supplier informed the NCC on 31 January 2025 that the following models are being recalled: XC90 sold from 20 January 2023, XC90 sold from 29 October 2024, and XC40 MY2024, which was available for sale from 24 January 2024,” the statement noted.
“Volvo Car South Africa has reported to the NCC that their investigations have found a possible software malfunction in the brake control module of the XC90 model, which was offered for sale in January 2023.”
According to Volvo Car South Africa, “In rare circumstances, this may lead to a loss of braking support function.”
The XC90 model sold from 29 October 2024 is being recalled due to a rod connecting the brake pedal to the brake booster that may not have been assembled according to manufacturing standards. If the rod disconnects, the brake pedal will not operate correctly.
The XC40 MY2024 model is facing an issue related to the turn indicator system.
This issue, as pointed out by Volvo Car South Africa, could “in rare cases cause a temporary loss of functionality for the left rear turn indicator.”
Vehicle owners are encouraged to reach out to the supplier.

The affected products comprise Cape Herb and Spice Chilli & Garlic Seasoning, Cape Herb and Spice Black Peppercorns, Cape Herb and Spice Pink Salt, Cape Herb and Spice Salt & Pepper, Cape Herb and Spice Sea Salt, Cape Herb and Spice Seasoned Salt, and Cape Herb and Spice Sweet & Smokey BBQ.
The supplier has informed the NCC of reports regarding the grinder mechanism breaking during usage, which may lead to a hard plastic piece being released from the grinder.
The NCC advises consumers who possess these spices to stop using them immediately and return them to the supplier or point of purchase for a full refund.
Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu stated: “The NCC encourages suppliers of these products to take all necessary actions to ensure that consumers are made aware of these product recalls and that appropriate remedies are provided to affected consumers.”
