Threads Users Can Now Follow Profiles from Other Fediverse Servers
A recent update from Meta’s competitor Instagram Threads enhances user connectivity with the fediverse, also known as the open social web, which includes platforms like Flipboard, Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, and others. On Wednesday, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that users can now follow profiles from different fediverse servers.
Commencing today, users who have enabled sharing to the fediverse can follow individuals from other servers who have engaged with federated profiles on Threads, including those who liked, followed, or replied to their content.
As users browse through Threads, they can visit someone’s profile to view all of their posts on different servers. Notifications will also be provided on Threads when that individual shares content on their own server.
This announcement aligns with Meta’s continuous pursuit of achieving full interoperability for the platform. Back in October, Threads initiated a feature that allows users connected to the fediverse to see who follows them and interacts with their posts from other servers, as well as view their replies from the fediverse.
Since March, the company has enabled users to link their accounts to the fediverse.
