Kaizer Chiefs to cut their monthly costs by R2.85 Million?

Kaizer Chiefs’ winter clearout could have massive financial rewards for a team hoping to reach the top of South Africa’s football pyramid again.

Top five earners at Kaizer Chiefs are all dispensable

  • Keagan Dolly – R1,4 Million
  • Itumeleng Khune – R480,000
  • Zitha Kwinika – R370,000
  • Ashley du Preez – R300,000
  • Yusuf Maart – R300,000

Top earners Keagan Dolly, Itumeleng Khune, Zitha Kwinika, Ashley du Preez and Yusuf Maart could all hypothetically leave Naturena this winter in a massive clearout. Legendary ‘keeper Khune isn’t extending his contract, Dolly’s injury problems are mounting and Kwinika won’t have a guaranteed place in the starting XI with Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe now the preferred combination in the centre of defence. Meanwhile, talk of a R20 Million move to Portual for Du Preez gathers pace and Yusuf Maart is replaceable in central midfield. It would be difficult to justify keeping any of these players while their wages continue to suffocate the club’s balance sheet. Between them, this quintet earn R2.85 million a month.

New goalkeeper era?

Some money saved on these wages could be reinvested in a new, top-class keeper. Chiefs and Pirates have been persistently linked with a move for Chippa and Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. The 28-year-old has several suitors, up to 12 according to his agent, and will certainly be leaving Chippa this winter. SoccerLaduma speculate that there’s interest from the Gulf region.

“There are two main teams interested in Stanley (Nwabali). It’s Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates but there are also teams from Europe and the Middle East so the team is taking its time to agree to offers made because they want to make the best money out of this deal. That’s why they have the asking price at around R35 Million. They believe he is worth SuperSport that or even United more,” the source said.
